In the 1990s some of Chicagos greatest hip hop artists such as Common, Twista, The Molemen, and Rubber Room began to emerge. During this time, several record labels overlooked the "Windy City". Artists were forced to press their own vinyl and release them independently. The legendary East of the Rock, was an example of this practice, their limited edition white label, Galaxy Rays EP was produced in this way. 50 copies were hand distributed by the artists themselves to vinyl shops, underground radio stations and Specialist DJs.
